Cloud dotted sky hawk circling high river flowing slow as time. Splashing through waves on a stone covered beach the wind and water in rhyme. Jumping from a tree at the old swimming hole, dangling my feet from a dock. Hat over my eyes, fishing pole by my side got no fish on the line, got no bait on the hook. It’s good to lay back on a day like that when it’s plain for all to see that everything is all right with the world and that it’s alright with me. Wind from the north blowing back and forth rain splattering on the pane while I’m hunkering down in my big easy chair to watch an old movie again. Or lying in the shade in my hammock cocoon between two perfect trees. Swapping lies with a few of the guys over beers ’round a fire doing just what we please. It’s good to lay back on a day like that when it’s plain for all to see that everything is all right with the world and that it’s alright with me. I stayed in the race trying to keep pace chasing the golden dream. But it’s true what they say that everything has its price and it ain’t all that it seems. But sitting here while the world glows with your smile at the grandchild on your knee, it’s a moment in time when I know what is mine and I understand I’ve got all that I need. It’s good to lay back on a day like that when it’s plain for all to see that everything is all right with the world and that it’s alright with me. It’s alright with me.

Will you be the one who holds me all through the night? Who will stand by my side if nothin’ is going right? Who will join in my laughter and share in all of my tears? Be a light that will shine with hope through all of our years? Yes, I’ll be the one who holds you all through the night. Who will stand by you if nothin’ is going right. I’ll join in your laughter, share in all of your tears. Be a light that will shine with hope through all of our years. Close your eyes breathe deep the morning skies As the love flows in your heart and mind I’ll be the one that you’ll find. Will you be the one who’ll dance with me in the rain? Who when I am lost will guide me home again? Will you stay with me when the flame of passion subsides? When I’m old and gray will you still be the one by my side? Yes, I’ll be the one who’ll dance with you in the rain. Who when you are lost will guide you home again. I’ll stay with you should the flame of passion subside. When we’re old and gray I’ll still be the one by your side. Close your eyes breathe deep the evening skies. As the love flows in your heart and mind I’ll be the one that you’ll find. I’ll be the one who’ll dance with you in the rain. Who when you are lost will guide you home again. I’ll stay with you should the flame of passion subside. When we’re old and gray I’ll still be the one by your side.

Maybe it was a Saturday maybe it was the fall that such details may have slipped my mind don’t bother me at all. ’Cause no matter what the day, the month or season too, I remember all about that day I fell in love with you. Just how you looked at me the smile in your eyes, the easy way you walked with me, the brightness of the skies, how light from the morning sun sparkled through the trees, and how the air surrounding us felt easier to breathe. Maybe it was a Saturday, maybe it was the fall ... How I could make you laugh, how I could make you sigh by reminding you that you were loved and feeling so was I. How I was like a little kid with a cutout valentine, I wore that heart upon my sleeve I thought it was for all time. And I remember all too well the hurtful things I said. Taking you for granted was the most stupid thing I did. It was a yesterday when the morning sun sparkled through the trees, when the air surrounding me felt easier to breathe. Maybe it was a Saturday, maybe it was the fall ... Today’s no longer a yesterday there’s a dark and dreary sky it’s clouded over like the day you came to say goodbye. Now these scattered memories haunt the hallways of my past reflecting in the fading light like bits of broken glass. Maybe it was a Saturday ...

He rode through the crossroads without slowing down Just breaking loose, blowing the hell out of town Twenty years on the line with nothing to show The fuse in his head was getting ready to go. A wife and some kids who just couldn’t understand That for his life to blow by wasn’t part of his plan He was thinking tomorrow might be a better day But tonight he was riding, just riding it all away. She was stuck in a corner where the world let her down Alone in the one bar in a one-horse town Ragged old sweater and shredded blue jeans Hard to believe she’d been her high school queen She was wondering about when things had turned worse Why men tore up her life, and how she thought she was cursed She was hoping tomorrow might be a better day But tonight she was drinking, just drinking it all away. But you and me babe, we’re living better than that Whether high on the hog or busted right flat ’Cause I got you and you know you got me It’s not the music we make, it’s the sweet harmony So let go the brakes, put the pedal to the floor To lighten the load, throw all the shit overboard We may never again feel what we’re feelin’ today So tonight let’s be dancing, just be dancing it all away. It’s something you can’t see Something you can’t be told Something you won’t understand Even if it knocks you cold. But it’s something you can feel If you are true right from the start You can know the power of a woman’s love When she can trust your heart. She was tired of being pushed and she was sick of the lies Somehow you just knew, you could read it in her eyes So when no one would hear what she had to say She took her old soul and she hid it away She didn’t ask much, she just wanted a friend To help carry her through to the dark at the end She’d forgotten tomorrow could be a better day So tonight she’s in hiding, just hiding it all away. But you and me babe, we got it good as it gets Flying high on each other with no safety net Our road isn’t smooth and it may not be straight But we’re travelling together, being driven by fate So let go the brakes, put the pedal to the floor To lighten the load, throw all the shit overboard We may never again feel what we’re feelin’ today So tonight let’s be dancing, just be dancing it all away.

Lost on the road, tired and forsaken, with nothing to help see me through, empty inside, with no place to hide then I found a true friend in you. Chained to my ways, pleading for mercy, believing that nothing was true, now free from my lies, you cleared my eyes when I found a true friend in you. No slave to the past, no fear of the future, a chance to begin things anew when I learned how to live, when I learned to forgive, when I found a true friend in you. So loosen your load, ease up on the reins, if there’s love in all that you do He will help share the burdens, all the burdens you bear when He finds a true friend in you.

about

December 2021

The EP “On A Day Like That” is the first chapter of an ongoing pandemic project. The project is dedicated to the memory of Engineer Geoff Cooper, late of Los Angeles and New York. Dear friend, artist, musician’s musician, UCLA classmate and gently critical listener. Gone too young.

Most of the songs in the project were written between 2017 and late-2021, including during the first long, and now second, isolating year of the Covid pandemic. I got the idea of putting them together in a collection after I recorded a couple of vocals at Jukasa Studios, basically as an experiment. There, with the help of engineer Jill Zimmermann, rough lyrics, tunes and instrumental tracks began to take shape as recorded songs. Creating a collection became my pandemic project.

Then, fabulously, musician, songwriter and author Tia McGraff was gracious enough to agree to take on the lead vocals of some of the songs, elevating them to another plane with her unique, insightful and quite lovely interpretations. Together with Tommy Parham, she also contributed background vocals on a number of other tracks.

As we continued to stumble along through government and community responses to Covid-19, the target for final completion of “On A Day Like That” kept getting pushed off. Finally, almost 18 months after starting, this first EP is out. Other chapters in the collection, some fifteen or so songs in all, will roll out as they are completed.

*REVIEWS OF “ON A DAY LIKE THAT”*

Gabriel Mazza, Mesmerized-
Back in 2020, when the pandemic started, Owen Young felt the need to connect with a deeper side of himself. Naturally, songwriting was chosen as a medium, seeing how the American talent could already boast evocative vocals and guitar prowess. Having previously dabbled with lyrical storytelling for a few years before that, Young was able to collect a rather beefy collection of songs, intimate and relatable gems that feel soothing and cathartic, an enjoyable listening experience.

Katrina Yang, PunkHead-
Young’s music naturally evokes openness and grandness - he’s on his porch, singing what’s on his mind as his eyes rest on the passing world. Introspective and evocative at the same time running parallel to what you’re going through, like the river that flows by your side on a lonely long-distance trip on a highway. His music gives you comfort and warmth during the most lonesome moments.

Music Taste (musictasste.uk)-
“Hiding It All Away” is also fantastic! It's a song that features some of the best guitar work on the whole EP, with layers of guitars that create a lush and full sound. The syncopated guitar rhythm in particular elevates the track, giving it an infectious rhythm that's hard not to nod along to.

Akram Soliman, Sistra-
“Maybe It Was A Saturday” feels like a Johnny Cash meets Elvis kind of piece…in that, it has 60s nostalgia written all over it, a chord progression that’s highly engaging and loveable, and warm vocal lines that are saddening and reminisce about the past. What makes the song unique though is the soft voice and warm timbre with which Owen sings, it’s really the star of the show here.

Naomi Joan, Illustrate Magazine-
Tia McGraff’s magnificent vocal prowess can truly be felt on the EP’s showstopper, “A True Friend In You.” What is meant to be a touching tribute to the power of friendship and faith makes us nod to a vermillion-skied country siesta to the classic unadulterated thick and sonorous vocals. It sets the EP to a glorious sunset.
